As you may be aware CRI has put in a planning application concerning Longley House on South Gate Ave, Southgate.

We would like to start a conversation with people living and working in the area who want to know more about our proposed use for the site. We invite you to come along and meet us, hear our plans, ask questions and raise any concerns you may have.

108 Malthouse Road

A developer from Hove has applied to Crawley Borough Council to convert this fine example of an Edwardian semi-detached family house, with many internal and external period features, into 3 one bedroom flats and 2 bedsits/ studio flats. The garden area will be a car park with the capacity to hold five cars. The property is in the recently designated Malthouse Road Conservation Area.

Residents living in the vicinity of the property believe that to grant planning permission for this development to take place would make a mockery of the concept behind conservations area designation and would offend not just the spirit of the idea but also the planning rules and guidelines. That is why they want your support to stop the development taking place.

If permission is granted a precedent will have been established that could lead to other residential family homes being bought up and converted into multi-occupied properties with the attendant problems associated with this type of development.

Over the course of the week a volunteer from Southgate Community Forum will call at various homes in the Malthouse Road area to seek support in the campaign to stop the developer gaining planning consent.

108 Malthouse Road Petition

We, the undersigned, object in the strongest possible terms to the proposed “development” of No.108 Malthouse Road, which is at present a semi-detached Edwardian family home, into a set of five flats, with the garden transformed into a car-park.

It would be ironic that, having just become a Conservation Area, we allow the very things that are considered unacceptable.

These proposals make a complete mockery of the spirit of a Conservation Area, as described in the Council’s own information pack made available to residents during the recent consultation period :

  • High density of development
  • Utter destruction of the quality of life of No.110 Malthouse Road
  • Fire risk of putting a kitchen in the roof-space
  • Dormer window in roof would infringe privacy of No.106
  • Conversion of garden into a car-park in this residential area.

We would urge the Planning Committee to give full consideration to the strength of feeling in the neighbourhood and to the many valid objections raised in individual submissions to the Planning Department.

Post Office Easter Saturday

We have discovered that Crawley’s main Post Office may be closed this Easter Saturday (30 March 2013) due to industrial action. Prospective visitors are encouraged to use one of Crawley’s many surrounding sub post offices.
